Elounda Car and Bike Rental information with Elounda77.net
Driving on Crete is an experience, an experience of adventure and discovery. From Elounda journeys to Sitia (1 1/2 hrs), Ierapetra (45 mins), Malia (45mins), Lassithi Plateau, the Dikteon Cave, Heraklion (1hr) and even to Rethymnon (2hrs+) and Chania (3hrs+) are all possible for a day trip. Plus, it makes quick journeys to check out the shops in Agios Nikolaos, the Dorian city of Lato near Kritsa, Neapoli, Sissi and Milatos and more, all within a 45 minute drive, a fun outing.
If you venture into the hills to explore around Elounda you will find many small villages, most with only a handful of houses. The scenery away from the coast is just as stunning and mountain roads can proceed for miles between buildings as they follow or cross the contours of valley and mountain sides. Often sheer drops are only protected by a steel or stone wall barrier and care is needed when driving. Roads on Crete can take you right up into the mountains (Crete's highest are over twice the height England's highest peaks and snow can cap their heights right into May of each year). Villages close to Elounda, easily reached by car in a short period of time include Plaka, Vrouhas, Seles, Pines, Nikikthiano, Fourni and Kastelli, all going away from Agios Nikolaos, and Kritsa, Mardati, Kalo Horio, Istron and more, on or close to Mirabello Bay.
Bike Hire and Safety Note: Whatever you see other people doing you MUST wear a crash helmet in Greece. Fines will be issued to tourists not wearing helmets. You MUST wear a seatbelt in a car. Get a taxi or the bus, both easy and more affordable than in many other European countries. You should check and understand all car rental and travel insurance policy cover applicable when driving rental cars abroad. Ensure that your rental includes CDW (Collision Damage Waiver) and that you bring any pre-exisitng damage to the vehicle to the attention of the hirer before signing for any vehicle. Carry your driving licence in addition to your other identification at all times when driving in Greece.
