Plaka sits opposite Spinalonga island, at the northern end of the bay, approximately 5km from the centre of Elounda. The road from Agios Nikolaos and Schisma (Elounda) passes through Plaka before heading up the mountainside towards Vrouhas, Loumas and Seles. Plaka has seen significant expansion in the past decade, especially since the development of the Blue Palace Resort and the village now has many tavernas, small cava (mini-market) and other shops. A large pebble beach with plenty of parking sits at the far end of the village and regular trip boats make the brief crossing to the island from the main pier / harbour area. A bus service connects the village with Schisma (Elounda) and Agios Nikolaos.
