Elounda escapes the rain that hindered 'Oxi Day' parades to the west

Many parades were hampered by bad weather this year, especially to the west in Heraklion prefecture, but Elounda's 'Oxi Day' service and parade was blessed with fair weather.

October 28th 2009 marks the 69th anniversary of events in 1940 when General Ioannis Metaxas and the Greeks refused Mussolini and the Italian army's demands to allow its troops to enter Greece. 'Oxi' or 'No!' thrust Greece into World War 2. The date of the Greek denial of the Italian Fascists' demands is a key point in the calendar, designated as a public holiday and commemorated every year on the event's anniversary with community parades throughout the country.
